The New Jersey Generals played three seasons in the from 1983-85. The team was owned by real estate mogul Donald Trump, who bought the club from oilman J. Walter Duncan and head coach Chuck Fairbanks. Trump kept the team in the spotlight with a huge payroll and star players. It's roster featured, Herschel Walker, Doug Flutie, Brian Sipe, Dave Lapham, Gary Barbaro, Jim LeClair, and Bobby Leopold. The team came close to acquiring Lawrence Taylor, coach Don Shula (to replace Walt Michaels), and going into the 1986 season did acquire Jim Kelly through a merger with the . Ultimately, the proposed move to fall that allowed the Generals to acquire Kelly caused the league to fold, and the 1986 season was never played. In 2022, the team name was revived for the new USFL, however the club was not included in the merger with the new XFL that formed the (new) UFL.
